10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace
by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
Cindi accidentally forgot to tell One Spirit not to send out their most recent books so today we received this book as well as another book by the same author, Being in Balance. I liked the look of them so we decided to keep them.
**Update**
I started reading this while taking a bath one day and have been reading little bits here and there. He describes 10 concepts to help you attain success and inner peace:

  1. Have a Mind That Is Open to Everything and Attached to Nothing
  2. Don't Die with Your Music Still in You
  3. You Can't Give Away What You Don't Have
  4. Embrace Silence
  5. Give Up Your Personal History
  6. You Can't Solve a Problem with the Same Mind That Created It
  7. There Are No Justified Resentments
  8. Treat Yourself As If You Already Are What You'd Like to Be
  9. Treasure Your Divinity
  10. Wisdom Is Avoiding All Thoughts That Weaken You

Most of it makes sense but some is a bit too broad and unrealistic. In the section on the sixth secret he says, "The world is just the way it is. The economy is just as it should be. The people who are behaving "badly"in the world are doing what they're supposed to be doing." And he goes on to say "If you're filled with anger about all of those "problems," you are one more person who contributes to the pollution of anger." I don't find this to be true. Especially for politicians and others in power who should be answering to the greater public and the greater world. We should be angry with they aren't acting in our best interest, I think anger can be a justified reaction and does have it's place in our lives. Greater change often occurs because of the anger we feel and the action it prompts us to take. We shouldn't assume anger is wrong or an unneeded emotion.

Fit From Within *Completed*

Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever
by Victoria Moran
I recently "borrowed" this book from my aunt when I was pet sitting. It had been suggested to me by a friend and I quickly realized why. It contains many great ideas on taking better care of yourself and your body. Some of the concepts don't fit but enough of them that it's worth reading and keeping. I either need to buy my own copy or "forgot" to return this one. {wink}
**Update**
I've been keeping this on my night stand to read before bed every night. It is full of things that seem obvious but we all need to be reminded of from time to time. I really enjoyed it and need to frequently re-read it to be sure to implement her wonderful suggestions.

Cindi "accidentally" got this yesterday when she was at Borders getting a free coffee. It was very discounted and was too much to resist. It is a stunning cookbook. It's not specifically vegetarian but there are plenty of vegetarian recipes that we can ignore the ones with meat. I *love* all the pretty pictures!!

This is my pick for October. I've decided, once again, to try and have a more regular and a more dedicated yoga practice. I haven't done much reading in regards to the more spiritual side of yoga so I'm hoping this book can fulfill this desire.
It arrived in the mail today but I haven't had a chance to check it out.

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself From Pre-conception through Birth (2nd Edition)
by Rachel Pepper
This has been on my pregnancy to-buy list for quite some time. As soon as it was brought to my attention that a new edition had come out I knew we had to buy it. Between this and the other two books we've purchased, we'll be more than prepared.
**Update**
I stared reading this yesterday and love it already. Her writing style is easy and fun to read as well as extremely informative and inclusive of the many varieties of lesbian families.
**Update**
I completed the conception portion of this book. I have many pages marked to go back and look at again with Cindi. She brings up some really important issues and question to discuss prior to conception that will make the pregnancy and future parenting much easier. I really like the author!

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence
by Amy Sedaris
My parents were nice enough to give Cindi a gift card for Borders for her birthday. She managed to sneak off on her lunch break and purchased this book. We are both very fond of Amy and her brother David and I know we'll both *love* this book. We may not be able to use a majority of the recipes she's included but it'll be good for some laughs. I plan to keep it on our coffee table to entertain what few guests we have.

A Donor Insemination Guide *Completed*

A Donor Insemination Guide: Written By and For Lesbian Women
by Marie Mohler, MA & Lacy Frazer, PsyD
I decided to order this book because it seemed to focus more on the physiological aspects of pregnancy conception. I hope for us to learn this on our own and not from a doctor, midwife, or birthing class. I hope to be well prepared so when the time comes we'll have questions and not blank looks. After seeing the experiences of family members regarding their pregnancies and births, I plan for us to be proactive and make decisions that are best for us, not a hospital or doctor.
**Update**
It didn't take me long to complete this book. It isn't very long but has very straightforward information on the different choices for donor insemination and offered advice on ways to track fertility to ensure you inseminate as close to ovulation as possible. The authors were obviously jaded by their negative experiences with insensitive and inept doctors and staff but it is still a very valuable resource for lesbian women.

cat vs. cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat
by Pam Johnson-Bennett
This book is my choice for September. It's been on my wish list for a very long time and I should have purchased it a long time ago with the issues that Ivy and Luna have. Though I'm happy to say they have gotten considerably better since we moved. I need any (good) advice I can get on keeping the peace in our two cat home.
**Update**
I started reading this last night, I'm hoping to finish it before the lesbian conception/pregnancy books I ordered arrive. I have hope that this book will teach me to better understand the body language of my cats and their territory issues. I have high expectations and will have to make the extra effort to ensure they are met.

The Omnivore's Dilemma *Completed*

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
by Michael Pollan
I started reading this as soon as it came in the mail. I'd heard wonderful things about it from sources I trust very much. This book discusses three areas of our diet and food culture; Industrial/Corn, Pastoral/Grass, Personal/The Forest. I'm almost finished with the first portion and am sure glad I'm vegetarian. I knew the state of the beef industry was bad but didn't know just how bad.
I'm feeling very defeated and angry about that state of our food. Corn is everywhere and I'm not in a position to make or grow everything I eat. I hope as the books continues I start to feel more empowered about my food and find the motivatio to do something about it.
**Update**
I'm really enjoying this book, it has made me so much more aware of my food and where it comes from. I am proud that we already buy most of our produce from our local farmers market. I discovered that UCD has chosen book for their fifth annual Campus Community Book Project, perfect timing if I say so myself ;)
**Update**
I finally finished this book last night. I stayed up late to read the last dozen or so pages I had left. I wish I would have updated more as I read it since a lot of the things that stuck out have already been forgotten. I can say this is one of my all time favorite non-fiction books. It kept me engrossed, informed me, intrigued me and at times disgusted me with such blatant information on our current food culture. It made me want to be a better eater and to opt out in favor of a food system that is better for us, the animals, the plants and the earth. It confirmed my choice to be vegetarian and pagan.

Green Witchcraft: Folk Magic, Fairy Lore & Herb Craft
by Ann Moura (Aoumiel)
I received this book as gift on one of my visits to Portland in 2001. It was purchased from one of my favorite independent bookstores, Powell's. I'd attempted to read it a few times and was never able to get into it. But I held onto it because it was still appealing to me.
My coven decided to start reading books to discuss at our circles. This ended up being our first pick. I've already read two chapters and can't put it down. I think I just wasn't in the right place to read it before, but I can tell I'm going to get a lot out of it this time around.
**Update**
I've really enjoyed this book but our coven has stalled a bit on our reading with other things taking priority. I hope we can revive the idea in the very near future.

Feminist Thought: A More Comprehensive Introduction (2nd Edition)
by Rosemarie Putnam Tong
I pulled this book off my book shelf the other night after unpacking. One of the best parts about moving is lovingly unpacking each book. I purchased it when I was living in Salt Lake City (1999) and had signed up for a Feminist Theory class at the University of Utah. I loved the class. Well I loved it the few days I was able to attend before I had to drop because I couldn't afford the tuition. I've attempted to read this book several times before and reading it now can understand why I didn't get very far. I'm in a much better place to be able to read and understand the concepts in this book. I hadn't been exposed to much in regards to feminist theory to really understand or relate to the book. This is one of the main reasons I don't get rid of books, you never know when you'll need or want them.

Charlotte
by Kathryn Shevelow Posted by Picasa
Our new book for August. I'm a bit tired so I'm just going to copy the review from Zooba. Not the best review, but it'll do until I can read it myself.
Lesbian history is being reconstructed one book at a time, so we’re thrilled to offer this incredible biography about an extraordinary woman who broke just about every rule of 1700s society. Charlotte Charke (1713-1760) lived her London life as a true product of a great metropolis. She was the daughter of a well-known comic actor/playwright of the time. With more interest in guns than needlework, Charlotte’s whole life was a drama, and it wasn’t long before she made her way to the stage…playing male roles. But after the final curtain call, she chose not to remove the man drag. Disowned by her family for disgracing them, she went from mother and wife to husband when she assumed the lifetime identity as Charles Brown and married another woman. This is a truly astounding slice of lesbian history.

Possible Side Effects *Completed*

Possible Side Effects
by Augusten Burroughs
Our next book from Zooba. Another memoir by a gay author and sure to be good. He's written quite a few other books I'm interested in reading.
**Update**
Well I put my other books aside and started reading this almost by accident. I wanted something to read in the bath and grabbed this. I'm glad I did. I haven't put it down since. The stories are hilarious and remind me of autobiographical stories I used to write when I was younger. I didn't even know this type of writing existed then. Should have kept writing that way... I finished it this morning walking to my therapy appointment. Yes I read and walk at the same time. I'm finally embracing it and going with it. :) I can't wait to read more of his stuff.
I should have more time for reading and blogging since I'm taking an extended break from school.

The Vampire Lestat *Completed*

The Vampire Lestat
by Anne Rice
I am continuing on my journey through the novels of Anne Rice with this novel, The Vampire Lestat. I've read this book previously, I'm guessing around ten years ago. I also have the graphic novel version which I plan to read after I finish the novel.
**Update** [6/21/06]
Now I remember why I was so obsessed with this book when I was in high school. It's amazing. I love the detail in which it's written and the obvious theme of struggle with loosing faith in religion. The first time I read it was when I was really starting to question the religion I had been born into and organized religion in general. It's sad knowing that'll she'll never write another book about Lestat again.
**Update** [7/3/06]
I stayed up late just so I could finish. Though I've come to realize I placed the books in the wrong order. There are at least three other books I should have read first. Oh well. I'm glad I read it "early".
I don't love Lestat as much as I did the first time I read it but enjoy how she can so easily tell the story from two different perspectives [Interview with the Vampire vs. The Vampire Lestat].
My favorite part about this book is the Egyptian mythology and the beautifully writing history of the vampires. It was my first introduction to Egyptian mythology which later led me to fall in love with Isis and Osiris. This will always remain one of my favorite books and one of the most beautifully written stories.

Mormonism and the Negro *Completed*

Mormonism and the Negro
by John J. Stewart
This book is as horrible as it sounds. My family is planning to move to Colorado in the fall and is already cleaning and packing. I've been telling my Grandmother for quite some time that if she ever wants to get rid of any of her books that I would love them. She was a bit confused since I officially left the Mormon church two years ago and a large majority of her books are regarding Mormon history and teachings. But most of them are out of print. The church has since changed their position on many of these subjects and enjoys pretending these books and teachings either don't exist or they misrepresent themselves and their history. I want proof of these old teachings and that like everything else the Mormon church can and does change. I started reading this book today with many exclamations of "Oh my god!", "Whatever!" and "Ha!". It's quite unbelievable but still very interesting to read. Though I have quite a time trying to understand their backwards logic and justification for years of indoctrinated racism.

The Blue Scorpion
by Julia Lieber
I decided to move this up my Zooba list to receive as my April pick. I figured some light reading for our honeymoon would be perfect. I received the first book in this series, There Came Two Angels, for my birthday last year. I'm looking forward to having time to sit and read an entire book, and this book is lucky enough to be the one.
**Update**
Well this book did come on our honeymoon but wasn't lucky enough to be touched the entire trip. I picked it up after finishing The Feast of All Saints. I'm now thinking that may not have been the best plan. They are two very different books-one a very detailed historical novel and the other a lesbian mystery. I might buffer the books with some good magazines.
**Update**
I was home alone this weekend and ended up finishing it. The character didn't irritate me as much once I got into the book. I enjoyed it, but the plot was a bit confusing and didn't develop as nicely as I would have liked. I was more interested in the relationship between two of the characters than the story itself.

by Kathy Farrell-Kingsley
This was Cindi's May Zooba pick. No surprise, it was a cookbook, our new obsession. There are some great looking recipes, as well as some that pretty obvious and don't really need a recipe. My only real complaint is the lack of pictures, but that is a personal preference. And to be honest the food rarely ever looks as good as it does in the pictures anyway. It'll make my lady's blog all the more fun, since our own pictures will be the first we'll see.

The Feast of All Saints *Completed*

The Feast of All Saints: A Novel (1979)
by Anne Rice
This is one of the books Cindi brought to our relationship and it's one of Anne Rice's books I've never read. It sounds really good and I'm exited to read one of her earlier novels.
**Update**
I love this novel, but unfortunately with starting my classes again I don't have as much time for reading, especially since most of my free time is being spent knitting. This experiment will have to be put on hold.
**Update*
Wow I've been reading this book since before January. I brought it along with us on our honeymoon and managed to get over half-way done with it while we were gone. Once I allowed myself the time to sit and read, I couldn't put it down. She does an amazing job with her detail of surroundings and characters. Even thought the book was full of characters, she developed them well enough I knew them all (I tend to get characters mixed up if there are too many of them). The plot development was perfect as well as the character development. She revealed information at the perfect times, and with only a few exceptions, I was unable to guess the outcome of the book. The last few nights I've stayed up late reading so I could finish.
I'd have to say that this is now probably not only one of my favorite books by Anne Rice, but by any author! I will definitely be reading it again in the near future.

This is Cindi's Zooba pick for February, we figured with the fast approaching wedding it couldn't hurt to have another book to help us out.
**Update**
The book came thought I haven't had time to look at it. Between doing homework and trying to read the fertility book so we can start charting takes up most of my time. I hope to skim it for ideas before our "team" meeting on Feb 25th.
